Cancer May Protect Against Alzheimer's Disease

New research suggests a potential protective relationship between cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The protein cystatin C, produced by cancer cells, appears to break down the amyloid plaques that characterize Alzheimer's disease. In experiments with mice, the protein penetrates the brain and causes the breakdown of plaques by immune cells. If these findings are confirmed in humans, they could pave the way for new treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
