California Governor Calls for Investigation into TikTok

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state's judicial authorities will launch an investigation into TikTok to determine whether the application censors content critical of Donald Trump, especially in relation to events in Minneapolis. The investigation follows complaints from users who experienced difficulties posting videos about the fatal shooting of Alex Pretty by an ICE officer. TikTok has admitted to technical issues, but attributed them to a power outage at a data center. The company denies censorship, arguing that the problems were purely technical. However, users report that their videos had fewer views than expected or were subject to content review. Journalists and celebrities, such as Billie Eilish, have also accused TikTok of censoring content related to ICE. Newsom, known for his criticism of Trump, argues that the investigation is necessary to ensure freedom of speech and the integrity of the application. Trump, for his part, has stated that TikTok helped him win the 2024 election, as he has gained more than 16 million followers on the platform.
