Bus Drivers Strike in Cyprus Over Traffic Light System Issues

Bus drivers in Cyprus, members of OMEPEGE – SEK and SEGDAMELIN – PEO, held a two-hour work stoppage today, Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and a protest rally in Solomou Square, Nicosia. This mobilization was triggered by the lack of a substantial solution to the problems arising from the operation of the traffic light system and its impact on professional bus drivers. The unions have repeatedly pointed out the safety issues caused by the sudden braking that drivers are forced to make to avoid red light violations. They have proposed the installation of warning systems for red lights to reduce the risk of accidents. It is noted that buses, due to their size and the presence of passengers, cannot be safely stopped abruptly. This work stoppage aims to pressure the Ministry of Transport to find a sustainable solution to the problem. The unions apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused to the public due to the work stoppage, emphasizing that this mobilization is necessary to protect the safety of passengers and drivers.
