British Destroyer 'Dragon' Arrives in Cyprus to Bolster Air Defence

The British destroyer 'Dragon' arrived in Cyprus on Monday, after a nearly two-week journey from England. The ship's arrival marks the start of its operational integration into the defence of Cyprus, strengthening the air defence of British bases on the island. British Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed the arrival of the 'Dragon' in Parliament, while also emphasizing that all British personnel in the region are safe. According to the Defence Secretary, the RAF and Navy have carried out almost 900 hours of flight time to defend Cyprus, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, 500 additional air defence personnel have been deployed to Cyprus, while the UK is working closely with the Republic of Cyprus, the US, France and Greece to enhance the island's security. The deployment of the 'Dragon' comes three weeks after an Iranian drone attack on the British Akrotiri base. The destroyer is considered one of the most advanced anti-aircraft and anti-missile defence ships in Europe, featuring advanced systems such as Sea Viper and the SAMPSON radar. The 'Dragon' has carried out numerous operations in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf, often escorting aircraft carriers. Its presence in Cyprus is a significant boost to the region's defence capabilities, given the increased geopolitical tensions.
