British Bases: Proposal for Talks Between Cyprus and the UK – What Christodoulides and Starmer Discussed

President Christodoulides had a lengthy telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, at the latter's initiative. The discussion focused on geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the need for coordination and cooperation. President Christodoulides presented a proposal for the start of discussions regarding the British Bases in Cyprus, mentioning problems that have arisen and lessons learned from crisis management. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom reiterated that the security of Cyprus is fundamental to his country and that the Bases will not be used in offensive military operations. President Christodoulides informed Mr. Sunak about Cyprus's approach to the EU for taking coordinated action to de-escalate the crisis, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism.
