Britain Gets Paid for Diego Garcia Base. Are British Bases in Cyprus Free Pasture?

The article refers to the relations between Britain and Cyprus, focusing on the issue of British Bases and the recent agreement for the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The author highlights the unequal treatment between Cyprus and Mauritius, as Cyprus does not receive comparable economic benefits from the use of British Bases, compared to Mauritius which receives 117 million euros annually for the lease of the Diego Garcia base. It is pointed out that the Akrotiri and Diego Garcia bases are jointly used by the US and Britain for military operations, such as the attack on Iran. The author questions the sovereignty of the British Bases in Cyprus in light of International Law and the evolving relationship between former colonizers and colonized. The agreement with Mauritius, which led to the return of the Chagos Islands, is presented as a result of pressure and recourse to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Cyprus, on the other hand, does not seem to have achieved similar results, despite the existence of British Bases on its territory. The article concludes with criticism that Cyprus receives no substantial benefit from the presence of British Bases, beyond the anxiety and panic caused by military operations. The author argues that Cyprus should demand more benefits and challenge the unjustified sovereignty of the British Bases.
