Borrowers Gain a Month for Foreclosures

Government bills regarding foreclosures are returning to the Ministry of Finance, as gaps were identified in the deadlines of the procedures. The bills upgrade the debt confirmation mechanism and introduce the binding nature of the Commissioner's decisions up to €20,000 for complaints against financial institutions. Borrowers will be able to appeal to the Commissioner earlier for debt confirmation. In addition, the foreclosure process will be frozen for 30 days, giving borrowers extra time to negotiate or seek the assistance of an insolvency practitioner. The insolvency practitioner will assess the debtor's financial situation and propose alternative solutions. The regulation will apply to primary residences valued up to €350,000.
