Bloomberg: Europe Considers Developing Nuclear Arsenal

According to a Bloomberg report, Europe is considering developing a nuclear arsenal for the first time since the end of the Cold War, as a response to the challenge of the reliability of the US as a military partner. The temporary halt of the US sharing intelligence with Ukraine in March 2025, resulted in military defeats for Kyiv and concern in Europe. Europe, seeking to retain the US in NATO and facing the need for rearmament, is considering strengthening nuclear deterrence. It relies on the US for the nuclear umbrella but the questioning of US reliability is leading to thoughts of an independent nuclear arsenal. Only the United Kingdom and France currently possess nuclear weapons, while Emmanuel Macron is expected to offer a nuclear umbrella to Europe. The acquisition of nuclear weapons by other European countries is theoretically possible, but would require significant costs and potential violations of international treaties. Discussions are being held at a low level, between countries that feel directly threatened by Russia, such as those hosting US military bases. Nuclear deterrence is expected to be a hot topic in European discussions, as uncertainty about the reliability of the US increases and the threat from Russia remains real.
