Bloodshed in Iran: At Least 5,000 Confirmed Dead From Protests, Says Iranian Official

An Iranian official in the region stated on Sunday that authorities have confirmed at least 5,000 deaths in the protests in Iran, including 500 members of the security forces, accusing "terrorists and armed rioters" of the death of "innocent Iranians". The official, who declined to be named due to the sensitive nature of the issue, told Reuters that some of the worst clashes with the highest number of deaths occurred in the Kurdish regions of northwestern Iran, an area where Kurdish separatists are active, where protests have been more violent in previous periods of destabilization. "The final death toll is not expected to increase dramatically," the official said, adding that "Israel and foreign armed forces" supported and armed those who took to the streets. SOURCE: ANA-MPA
