Traffic Blackout Looms in Limassol: 3rd Parallel Motorway Planned

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, stressed that the traffic problem in major urban centers is a top priority, warning of potential “black holes” in traffic if immediate action is not taken. In Limassol, approximately 13,000 new vehicles are registered annually, without corresponding withdrawals, significantly increasing traffic congestion. The Minister defended the need to implement new road projects, such as the Northern Bypass and the extension of Phytorio Street, despite opposition. He pointed out that the cancellation of certain projects, such as the extension of Phytorio Street, may satisfy local reactions, but deprives the city of critical exits. A significant project planned is the “Third Parallel” motorway north of Limassol, which will relieve congestion on the existing axis and serve the mountainous areas. The total cost of the road projects is expected to exceed 300 million euros, and the implementation horizon extends over twenty years. In addition, the Minister referred to road safety, emphasizing the tragic figures of deaths from traffic accidents and the need to reduce victims. Measures such as monitoring motorways with cameras and average speed control are being promoted.
