Bicommunal Veterinary Committee Briefed on Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Members of the Bicommunal Veterinary Committee convened today to receive updates on the foot-and-mouth disease situation in Cyprus. The meeting was held at the request of the Greek Cypriot side following the detection of the first case in the Turkish-held areas. During the meeting, veterinarians from the Republic of Cyprus provided information on the situation in the free areas, including two new cases in Dali and Geri. The Turkish Cypriot side reported that the disease has been contained in the Lapithos area and that vaccination of livestock in the Turkish-held areas is ongoing. Sampling continues in other areas as well. The Greek Cypriot side proposed the adoption of uniform protocols based on EU standards, a proposal being considered by the Turkish Cypriot side. The committee had followed a similar approach during the coronavirus pandemic.
