Best Cars for Senior Drivers: ADAC Research Reveals Key Features

New research from the German organization ADAC examines the characteristics a car should have to be suitable for senior drivers. While older drivers are involved in fewer accidents overall, the accidents they are involved in tend to be more serious. The discussion about when a senior driver should stop driving is complex, as driving is linked to independence and freedom of movement. The ADAC research highlights the importance of active safety systems and advanced driver assistance systems as a 'safety net'. In addition, the size and ergonomics of the vehicle play a crucial role, with compact cars and good all-round visibility considered ideal. ADAC specifies certain technical specifications for the ideal car for seniors: a length of up to 4.50 meters, a height of at least 1.50 meters, a seat height of at least 47 centimeters, and capacity for 4-5 passengers with a luggage space of up to 78 centimeters. These criteria exclude certain types of cars, such as two-seater sports cars and large commercial vans. In summary, the research highlights the need for cars that offer safety, ease of handling and comfort for senior drivers, so they can maintain their mobility and independence for as long as possible.
