Beloved Greek Singer Marinella Passes Away

The renowned Greek singer Marinella has passed away at the age of 87, following a severe stroke she suffered in September 2024 during a concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The news of her death was announced by her family, who expressed their deep sorrow. Marinella was hospitalized for a considerable period after the stroke but returned home to receive care. Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in Thessaloniki in 1938, Marinella began her career in the city's music scenes in the late 1950s. After moving to Athens, she collaborated with prominent creators and released her first record in 1957. She was married to Stelios Kazantzidis from 1964 to 1966, with whom she had significant artistic collaborations. Marinella established herself as one of Greece's leading singers, performing works by composers such as Manos Hadjidakis, Stavros Xarchakos, and Giorgos Chatzinassios. In 1973, she presented the first one-woman show in Greece, introducing a new form of artistic performance. Throughout her career, she released over 40 personal albums and collaborated with many well-known artists. Marinella's greatest hits include songs like "Synora i agapi den gnorizei" (Borders, love does not know), "Stalia stalia" (Drop by drop), and "Den einai pou fevgeis" (It's not that you leave), which remain timeless. She represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the song "Krasí, thálassa kai t’ agóri mou" (Wine, sea and my boy). Her career was filled with significant moments and collaborations, and her performances with other artists, such as Haris Alexiou, were particularly popular.
