Beirut Time: Cyprus Message to Iran via Lebanon Regarding RAF Akrotiri Bases

According to a report by the Lebanese media outlet Beirut Time, the Director of the Cypriot Intelligence Service, Tasos Tzionis, allegedly contacted the leadership of a political organization in Lebanon, requesting mediation to send a “reassuring message” to Iran. The message concerned assurance that the use of the British base in Akrotiri for offensive actions against Tehran would not be allowed. The Cypriot side reportedly sought the assistance of the specific political organization due to its good relations with Iran, as the Republic of Cyprus does not have direct communication channels with Tehran. The aim of the initiative is to prevent the escalation of tensions towards Cyprus, in a period of increased geopolitical instability in the Eastern Mediterranean. The report also mentions concerns about potential impacts on the Cypriot economy, particularly the risk of withdrawal of foreign investment, such as Israeli, Russian, and Chinese, in the event of further escalation of the crisis. So far, there has been no official confirmation or denial of the information from Nicosia. The news highlights Cyprus's attempt to maintain a mediating stance and avoid involvement in a potential conflict in the region, while also protecting its economic interests.
