Banks Aim to Continue Success Story in 2026

European banks, including Cypriot and Greek ones, presented their strongest performance in nearly three decades in 2025, thanks to significant deals and increased profitability. Banks now have substantial surplus capital and can invest in new activities. The Greek and Cypriot banks are expected to announce updated business plans at the end of February - beginning of March, which will include estimates of the contribution of acquisitions and digital upgrades to their revenues and profits. There is increased interest in mergers and acquisitions, especially in asset management and fintech companies, although interest in acquiring fintech companies is declining somewhat. Eurobank led the way in strengthening its international footprint with the acquisition of Hellenic Bank in Cyprus and the merger of its insurance subsidiaries. Alpha Bank consolidated its position as the third largest bank in Cyprus with the acquisition of AstroBank and its expansion into the insurance sector.
