Ball in Parliament's Court Regarding Attorney General's Accountability

The issue of the Attorney General's lack of accountability remains in the hands of the House of Representatives, which will decide on its further course. The Attorney General, Giorgos Savvides, stated that the discussion has not reached substantial conclusions and that the final decision rests with the legislative authority. Two bills are under consideration: one from the Ministry of Justice and one from DIKO MP Christiana Erotokritou. The main difference between the two bills is that the government's bill regulates the review of the decisions of the Attorney General after a possible separation of the Attorney General's Office, while Ms. Erotokritou's proposal concerns the direct review of the Attorney General's decisions. Mr. Savvides presented the position of the Legal Service and emphasized the need for a correct and effective review process. The Supreme Court has expressed reservations about the increased workload that would result from reviewing decisions. Mr. Savvides stressed that any act of review should take place at the level of the Supreme Court. Resolving the issue requires a strong and indisputable review process for the future.
