Bahrain Proposes Military Action Plan Amidst Hormuz Crisis

Bahrain has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council authorizing the use of “all necessary means” to ensure free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, responding to growing concerns about potential Iranian actions. The draft is supported by other Gulf countries and the US, but is unlikely to be approved due to the veto power held by China and Russia. Simultaneously, France has proposed an alternative, milder resolution calling on all parties to avoid escalation and return to dialogue. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil exports pass, has become a focal point of rising tensions due to Iranian threats. Bahrain’s draft characterizes Iran’s actions as a threat to international peace and security and seeks to allow UN member states to use all necessary means to prevent the closure of the Strait. The French draft, instead of authorizing action, encourages states interested in commercial sea lanes to coordinate defensive efforts, such as escorting merchant ships, with respect for international law. This draft appears to have a greater chance of garnering wider support in the Security Council. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, with few ships traversing it following Iranian threats. The disagreement among powers in the Security Council regarding how to address the situation underscores the complexity of the geopolitical situation in the region.
