Cattle Farmers: State Doesn't Cover Full Disinfection Costs

Cattle farmers in Athienou are reacting to a letter from the Department of Agriculture stating that the state will cover up to €5,000 for the installation costs of disinfection points, while the actual cost amounts to €6,500. The farmers argue that they are bearing the additional cost, as well as the cost of disinfectant drugs, in order to protect the area from the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The Department of Agriculture had called on municipalities to proceed with the construction of tanks and automated wheel disinfection systems in areas with a concentration of livestock units, especially those bordering the green line and areas with outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease. The Municipality of Athienou did not have the capacity to cover the cost, resulting in the farmers taking the initiative to install the disinfection systems at eight crossing points, in order to avoid delaying protective measures. The farmers express their strong dissatisfaction with the fact that the amount offered by the state does not even cover half of the cost they paid, while pointing out that the cost of disinfectant drugs is borne exclusively by them.
