Avalanche Hits Ski Resort in France, Skiers Buried in Snow

An avalanche hit a ski slope at the La Flégère ski resort in Chamonix, France, sweeping skiers off their feet. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon and was captured on video, showing a massive amount of snow descending rapidly, hitting three people. Three people were buried up to their necks but were quickly rescued and saved. Other skiers managed to move away in time. The avalanche affected two slopes 100 meters apart and started on slopes near the Floria lift. Around 60 people participated in the rescue operation, including members of the ski patrol, the alpine gendarmerie, mountain guides, and trainers, as well as four specially trained dogs. The area had experienced heavy snowfall and a blizzard the previous week. Experts warn that this winter is one of the most dangerous in recent years in Europe, with 86 deaths from avalanches in the first two months. The increased danger is attributed to a combination of severe weather events and the popularity of off-piste skiing, as well as a "weak layer" of snow under heavier layers.
