Audit Office: Candidates Hid Campaign Expenses Behind 'Feasts'

The Audit Office has published a special report on the election expenses of candidates for Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the June 9, 2024 elections. The audit found that a large portion of campaign expenses remains unchecked, as the audited advertising expenses amounted to only 31% for Mayors and 23% for Deputy Mayors. Cases of exceeding spending limits were identified, as well as insufficient documentation and discrepancies between the statements of candidates and service providers. Specifically, 51% of candidates did not submit or submitted incomplete supporting documents, while inconsistencies were recorded between the information provided by candidates and advertising service providers. In addition, practices of concealing expenses were identified, such as invoicing to third parties and cash payments over €100. The report demonstrates that the total amount of campaign expenses is likely higher than declared, raising questions about the transparency and legality of the electoral process.
