Attorney General: Regulation of Uncontrolled Remains with the Parliament

The Attorney General, George Savvides, stated that the regulation of the issue of uncontrolled power rests solely with the House of Representatives. Following a session of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, he noted that the discussion is at an early stage and that the issue is constitutional, requiring the wisdom of the Members of Parliament. Two bills were examined: one from the Ministry of Justice, concerning the control after a possible separation of the Attorney General's Office, and another from MP Christiana Erotokritou, concerning direct control regardless of the separation. Mr. Savvides presented the position of the Legal Service, emphasizing the constitutional reservations in the event of a discussion within the framework of the separation. The increased workload of the Supreme Court and the need for control at the level of the Supreme Court were also highlighted. The Attorney General stressed the need for a proper procedure and a strong control system.
