Attorney General: Decision on Independent Prosecutor's Oversight Rests with Parliament

Published January 14, 2026, 14:29

Attorney General George Savvides stated that the decision regarding the independence of the Attorney General rests solely with the House of Representatives. The discussion at the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs focused on two proposals: the bill from the Ministry of Justice and the proposed law from DIKO MP Christiana Erotokritou. The main difference between the two proposals is that the government bill concerns the review of the decisions of the Attorney General after a possible separation of the Attorney General's Office, while Ms. Erotokritou's proposal directly concerns the review of the decisions of the Attorney General himself, regardless of the separation. Mr. Savvides presented the position of the Legal Service and emphasized that the Parliament must decide whether to proceed with the review independently of the separation or whether all related bills, including the separation, will be discussed. The Attorney General reiterated his constitutional reservations regarding the separation of the Attorney General's Office, emphasizing that such a change should be carefully considered. He noted that the Supreme Court has expressed concerns due to its already heavy workload. He also stressed that any review or revision process of decisions should be carried out at the level of the Supreme Court. Mr. Savvides underlined the need for a correct and effective review process, which will ensure the strong and indisputable functioning of the system in the future. Answering a journalist's question, he stated that the discussion has not progressed substantially, but that the Government has presented its proposals within the framework of the reorganization of the Legal Service.
