At Least Nine Soldiers Killed in Jihadist Ambush in Nigeria

At least nine soldiers were killed and more than ten are missing after an ambush by jihadists from the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) in Borno state, northeastern Nigeria. The attack targeted around 30 soldiers patrolling near Damask, close to the Niger border. The jihadists detonated an explosive device and followed with a barrage of fire, forcing the soldiers to disperse. Eight soldiers managed to return to base, while the fate of the others remains unknown, including their commander. Borno state has been a hotbed of jihadist violence since 2009, with Boko Haram and ISWA causing significant casualties and a humanitarian crisis.
