Asphalt Plant Planned in Parekklisia, Cyprus – Community Raises Concerns

A new asphalt concrete production unit is planned to operate in Parekklisia, Cyprus, with a capacity of up to 160 tons of asphalt per hour and consuming approximately 1,230 tons of aggregate daily. The operation of the plant has sparked reactions from the community, which expresses fears about increased traffic congestion and the worsening of environmental problems in the area. The Parekklisia community leader has already expressed his opposition, pointing out that the area is already burdened from a traffic and environmental perspective, as a concrete crushing unit is also operating. He is asking the state to find solutions to address these problems before the operation of the new plant proceeds. The company planning the plant argues that it will use modern equipment with anti-pollution technologies, making its operation environmentally sustainable. Additionally, it states that the plant will meet the needs of the Cypriot market for asphalt concrete. The consultation for the plant's licensing is ongoing. The company has a license to pump up to 25,000 tons of water annually, and the estimated electricity consumption is 1,500,000 kWh/year. The final decision on licensing will be made after considering the community's concerns and the environmental impact of the plant.
