Antoniou on Video Leak: Nothing Legally Reprehensible for Charalambous

Deputy Government Spokesperson Yannis Antoniou addressed the controversial video leak, stating that the government is handling the issue on two levels: legal investigation and political management. The legal investigation concerns the police and the content of the video, while the origin and circumstances of its creation are also being examined. At the political level, the government aims to dispel the negative image created by speaking honestly and transparently. Statements have already been taken from former minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis, and both individuals appearing in the video, the President's Office Director Charalambous and Mr. Chrysos, are expected to testify. Mr. Antoniou emphasized that there is nothing legally reprehensible in Mr. Charalambous' involvement, which was limited to procedural matters and investment interest, always within a specific framework of instructions and in cooperation with the Deputy Minister to the President. He also stressed that the video appears to have been maliciously edited to create negative impressions of the government and that there is no network operating illegally around investments. Furthermore, the spokesperson warned of the need for caution regarding any new videos, as similar attempts have occurred in the past (e.g., the Al Jazeera case) with a different approach. In the current case, the potential investors no longer have a physical presence, which differentiates the situation. In summary, the government is allowing the prosecution authorities to complete their work, while the political future of Mr. Charalambous is the responsibility of the President of the Republic. Mr. Antoniou called on the public to judge strictly but also to give the government the opportunity to respond where possible.
