Annita Demetriou: Decisive EU Action Needed for Middle East

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, called for decisive action by the European Union in the Middle East, emphasizing that the crisis in the Mediterranean creates challenges for the EU and requires solidarity to build a stronger and safer Europe. The statement was made at the opening of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for European Affairs (COSAC). Ms. Demetriou called on the EU to actively promote de-escalation through urgent diplomacy to prevent a wider conflict, protect civilians, and ensure energy supply chains. She stressed the need for responsible and coordinated action. The President of the House of Representatives mentioned that the meeting was held online due to the disruption of flights to Cyprus due to the conflict in the Middle East, a fact that highlights the uncertainty and challenges of the current period. She expressed her concern about the influence of social media, misinformation, and toxicity. According to Ms. Demetriou, Cyprus is fully implementing the national plan “ESTIA” to facilitate the evacuation of Europeans and third-country nationals. The government is coordinating closely with its partners to provide humanitarian assistance, while Cyprus seeks to strengthen its role as a diplomatic bridge between the EU and the countries of the Middle East, promoting cooperation and dialogue.
