All Animals Culled at Infected Livestock Unit in Livadia - No New Cases Reported

In Livadia, the culling of all 109 animals at an infected livestock unit has been completed. The culling took place despite tensions on Saturday when farmers attempted to prevent veterinary services from entering the unit, requiring police intervention. In total, approximately 30,000 animals have been culled in infected livestock units in Nicosia and Larnaca as part of measures to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Importantly, no new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded so far. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that the Veterinary Services, in collaboration with 15 other state agencies, are working intensively to contain the virus and return to normalcy. The vast majority of farmers are cooperating responsibly, however, there are isolated cases that complicate the situation. In the specific incident in Livadia, the farmer obstructed the veterinary services, potentially contributing to the spread of the virus. Furthermore, it was found that the number of animals on the farm was higher than initially reported (109 instead of 30), a fact that is being investigated. The Veterinary Services call for strict adherence to the law and full compliance with the measures to protect the livestock sector.
