Ali Larijani: Who Was Iran's Most Powerful Man, with the Double Identity?

Ali Larijani, one of Iran's most powerful men, was killed in an attack attributed to Israel. He was a man with a double identity, capable of negotiating with the West and maintaining relations with hardliners, as well as having access to the Supreme Leader. Coming from a powerful religious-political family, known as “the Kennedys of Iran,” Larijani held significant positions in the Revolutionary Guards, the Ministry of Culture, and the presidency of the Parliament for 12 years. His background gave him access to all centers of power in Tehran. Initially, he supported the 2015 agreement with the West, but after returning to the top of security in 2025, he adopted a tougher line, ordering the suppression of anti-regime protests. Following US and Israeli attacks, he promised “a lesson that will not be forgotten.” Larijani was considered a pragmatist who could function as a “bridge” between different factions. Before Khamenei’s death, he was designated as the man who could take control of the country in an emergency, highlighting his central position in the Iranian regime.
