AKEL Secretary-General: No New Developments Expected in Cyprus Talks

The Secretary-General of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that no new developments are expected in the Cyprus issue, as things stand today, as Turkey has not expressed any intention to resume negotiations. He made this statement at an event honoring veterans of AKEL Larnaca, who joined the party in 1976 and have completed 50 years of party activity. Mr. Stefanou mentioned that they are awaiting the results of the meeting between President Christodoulides and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, but currently there are no prospects for anything new, as the UN Secretary-General will wait for the parliamentary elections in Cyprus. Furthermore, Turkey has not shown any willingness for dialogue and continues to promote its position for a two-state solution. The AKEL Secretary-General stressed the need for the Cypriot side to promote initiatives and proposals to continue negotiations from where they left off, as well as the implementation of Confidence-Building Measures. The event also honored the party's centenary, while Mr. Stefanou referred to the historical journey and struggles of AKEL.
