AKEL Proposes Law to Combat Deep Fakes, Inspired by Danish Legislation

AKEL has submitted a bill to address the creation and harmful use of deep fakes, using Danish legislation as a model. AKEL MP Christos Christofides explained that the proposal enshrines the intellectual right of every person to their face, voice, and personal characteristics. The aim is to prevent the unauthorized use of these characteristics, except in cases of satire or criticism. The proposal was discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Commerce, where it received a positive response from all stakeholders. In addition, the inclusion of the creation of deep fakes for the purpose of causing harm as a criminal offense is being considered, following a recommendation from the Attorney General. Cyprus has already distinguished itself in the European Union for its pioneering legislation regarding child pornography produced by artificial intelligence. The new bill comes as a continuation of the EU's efforts to regulate issues related to artificial intelligence. Christofides emphasized that deep fakes can create serious problems at both the individual and societal levels, citing examples such as false statements by political figures or the use of people in advertisements without their consent. This legislation seeks to protect individuals from such abuses and ensure the integrity of information.
