AKEL Initiative for Transparency and Accountability in Cyprus

AKEL is launching an initiative to strengthen transparency and accountability in Cyprus, responding to the scandal caused by the release of the “video of shame.” The party accuses President Christodoulides of failing to take responsibility and has submitted a bill to Parliament to abolish the Independent Social Support Agency and transfer its powers and assets to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation. The bill, co-signed by MPs from other parties, aims to ensure the transparent and effective use of public funds to support young people socially through education. At the same time, findings from investigations are highlighted, demonstrating opacity and potential illegal practices within the Agency, such as payments from companies with state contracts and companies under investigation.
