AKEL General Secretary Expresses Cautious Optimism for Cyprus Talks

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, expressed cautious optimism regarding the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, linking it to the similar optimism expressed by the UN Secretary-General in his report on UNFICYP. He emphasized the need for initiatives and clear positions to "push" things towards a solution, reiterating the goal of restarting talks from where they left off in Crans Montana in 2017 and achieving a settlement that will end the Turkish occupation and reunite Cyprus. Mr. Stefanou highlighted the importance of safeguarding convergences and utilizing the UN framework. Furthermore, he referred to the need to approach developments with responsibility, specific proposals, and patriotism – characteristics he believes distinguish AKEL's politics. He expressed pride in the party's 100-year history, which he considers a legacy for continuing the struggle for Cyprus and its people. Regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections, the AKEL General Secretary expressed confidence in achieving a stronger AKEL, emphasizing that a strong AKEL represents hope for the country and its people. He underlined the need for hard and collective work to realize this goal. Finally, Mr. Stefanou acknowledged the many challenges facing Cyprus, Europe, and the world, but expressed his belief that AKEL will continue to fight for the progress and prosperity of the people.
