AKEL: Crucial Juncture for Cyprus – “Emerging Momentum Requires Political Will”

AKEL believes the Cyprus issue is at a crucial juncture, after years of stagnation, as a fragile but existing momentum is forming. The party emphasizes the need for immediate and substantial initiatives from both leaders, respecting previous convergences and the Guterres Framework, to restart negotiations. It welcomes the rejection of a two-state solution by the Turkish Cypriot community and the agreement on a solution with political equality. AKEL reiterates its proposal for energy issues as a positive incentive and calls for the immediate implementation of agreed Confidence-Building Measures. It also expresses concern about violations in the buffer zone and the upgrading of military installations, while welcoming the UN Secretary-General's references to Varosha and the implementation of relevant resolutions. AKEL urges the President to take responsibility and work towards the liberation and reunification of Cyprus.
