AKEL and Charalambidou Part Ways: MP 'Erases' AKEL from Social Media

A rift has formed between AKEL and MP Irene Charalambidou, leading to the termination of their cooperation. Ms. Charalambidou made a symbolic move by changing the name of her Facebook group from “Irene Charalambidou MP for AKEL” to “Irene Charalambidou MP for Nicosia”. She responded to AKEL's announcement, emphasizing that her concerns relate to part of the party's leadership and offering to substantiate her positions. She also expressed criticism of the support for the Mavroyiannis candidacy in the 2023 Presidential election, believing him to be a candidate who covered the policies of Nikos Anastasiades on the Cyprus issue. Ms. Charalambidou stated that she is not interested in withdrawing from politics, but would not have the opportunity to continue with AKEL, and confirmed that she had not negotiated with other formations. AKEL responded that Ms. Charalambidou's accusations contradict her previous statements, arguing that they question her past actions.
