The European Council's agenda includes issues such as competitiveness, the situation in the Middle East, and Ukraine. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressed optimism for specific decisions, while not ruling out measures to address the impact of the war on energy prices. The President Christodoulides emphasized that the Summit aims for specific deliverables and substantial decisions to strengthen the EU's competitiveness. Regarding the Middle East, he highlighted the need for strong political messages from the EU, calling on the Union to take initiatives for de-escalation and the termination of the war. Furthermore, he referred to the need for support for Lebanon, which was incorporated into the Summit's Conclusions at Cyprus' initiative. He also focused on the discussion regarding the mutual assistance clause (Article 42(7)), emphasizing the value of European solidarity. This discussion will continue at the Informal European Council to be hosted in Cyprus on April 23 and 24. Simultaneously, a discussion between European leaders and the United Nations Secretary-General is expected, aiming to issue a unified message in favor of resuming substantial negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
