ADMEE Remains Committed to GSI, Negotiations Continue for Israel Interconnection

ADMEE confirms it is not abandoning the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project (GSI), despite existing differences with the Cypriot side regarding a €25 million payment. Sources at ADMEE emphasize that the project is legally covered by the interstate agreement and that the Greek government is actively seeking investors, with the recent visit of the Minister of Environment and Energy to the US being part of this effort. The aim is to update the techno-economic studies to make the project more attractive to investors, without changing the cost-sharing between Greece and Cyprus, but with a possible revision of the total budget. At the same time, the faster maturation of the Cyprus-Israel interconnection section is being considered, due to delays in the Greece-Cyprus section. The Cyprus-Israel interconnection will not be subsidized by the EU and will be fully funded by consumers, while the regulatory authorities of the two countries are negotiating the cost-sharing. At the technical level, there is continuous exchange of data and meetings between Cyprus and Israel for the cost-benefit study. ADMEE states that it is trying to facilitate agreement between the regulatory authorities, but cannot impose it. The final investment decision will be made only if there is a joint regulatory decision and revenues are determined. Overall, the situation of the GSI remains fluid, with ADMEE insisting on the implementation of the project, but recognizing the need to update the studies and attract investors. The Cyprus-Israel interconnection is progressing in parallel, with its own funding and negotiations on cost-sharing.
