Additional Safeguards for European Farmers After EU-Mercosur Agreement

Published February 10, 2026, 14:37

The European Parliament has approved additional safeguards to protect European farmers ahead of the upcoming liberalization of trade with Mercosur countries. The new regulation allows the EU to temporarily suspend tariff preferences if imports cause damage to European producers. The European Commission will conduct investigations if imports of sensitive products (beef, poultry, eggs, citrus fruits, sugar) increase by 5% over three years and import prices are at least 5% lower than European prices. Member states or agricultural sector bodies can also request an investigation. The Commission will inform Parliament every six months about the impact of imports. The regulation will come into force after approval by the EU Council and the entry into force of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement.
