A Start is Finally Made for the Miserable Bases

A step towards addressing the status of British bases in Cyprus appears to have been taken, with the government raising the issue of renegotiation and opening official dialogue. The reference in the conclusions of the European Council, which states the EU's readiness to provide assistance, is considered significant as it sends a message to London. President Christodoulides proposed the establishment of a technical committee to discuss the status. Despite previous efforts, such as the 2014 agreement on villages around the bases, the regime remains largely unchanged. The issue is considered political and humanitarian, as it concerns the colonial nature of the regime and the need for equal treatment of citizens. There are also financial debts owed by Britain to Cyprus, as stipulated in the Treaty of Establishment. The need for dialogue and resolution of the problem is emphasized, as the continuation of the existing regime is considered unacceptable. The discussion about the bases had been raised in the past by Tassos Papadopoulos, but the efforts had no follow-up. The current approach is considered important as it opens the issue as a problem that needs a solution, regardless of whether there will be immediate results.
