A Crooked Nail… Cut Off the Hand

There is widespread anger and frustration in Cypriot society towards the political system, a situation that is largely justified. However, within this climate, a dangerous trend of nihilism and leveling has crept in, which oversimplifies problems and does not offer realistic solutions. The party system, as it developed after the death of Makarios, has exhausted its purpose and has turned into a management system, which does not meet the modern needs of society. Even “left-wing” governments have followed the same beaten path, without daring to make substantial changes. The clientelistic relationship between parties and citizens continues to exist, taking various forms, such as appointments of party members to the public sector, privileged information, and the provision of reciprocal services. This leads to a sad situation where the basic rights of citizens depend on the intervention of political figures. The delay in the administration of justice, corruption and collusion reinforce citizens' distrust of institutions and lead to widespread disparagement. To change this situation, institutional changes are necessary, including constitutional and legislative revisions. Society, for its part, must take responsibility and choose politicians based on their credibility and contribution, and not on criteria of personal gain.
