Nipah Virus Outbreak Prompts Airport Health Measures in Asia

An outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India has raised concerns in several Asian countries, prompting the implementation of stricter health controls at airports and land borders. Five healthcare workers have been confirmed infected, with two in critical condition in intensive care, and around 110 people are under quarantine. Indian authorities describe the outbreak as contained but are taking preventative measures. The Nipah virus, which is transmitted from bats and pigs, has a mortality rate of 40-75% and currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. Consequently, countries like Thailand, Nepal, and Taiwan are enhancing health screenings, implementing measures similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic. India has issued prevention guidelines, and research is ongoing to monitor the virus.
