51-Year-Old Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison for Sexual Assaults

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Permanent Criminal Court of Famagusta for a series of serious sexual offenses against a 26-year-old foreign woman. The offenses were committed between July and September 2023 in Ayia Napa and Paralimni. The court found him guilty of 15 out of the 16 charges against him, including eight counts of rape, sexual assault, threats, and stalking. During sentencing, the court emphasized the severity of the offenses and the systematic nature of the defendant's behavior, as well as the fact that the offenses involved multiple acts on different occasions. Cypriot and English case law for similar offenses was considered, where sentences range from 9 to 10 years for individual cases of rape. Additionally, the court examined the defendant's criminal record, which included previous convictions for other offenses, but not of a sexual nature. The 13-year sentence was imposed taking into account the seriousness of the crimes and the need to deter similar acts in the future. The case received significant public attention due to the gravity of the offenses and the systematic nature of the defendant's behavior. The conviction marks a significant development in the justice system's efforts to protect women from sexual violence and punish perpetrators.
