Cyprus Primary Schools Face Teacher Shortage, 5000 Children Affected

The POED (Cyprus Primary Teachers Union) is reporting a severe shortage of substitute teachers in primary schools across Cyprus, resulting in approximately 5000 children being without a teacher today. POED President Myria Vasiliou spoke of “indifference and inaction” on the part of the Ministry of Education, emphasizing that promises to fill vacancies are not being fulfilled. According to POED data, there are 170 unfilled substitute positions in Primary Education today, while in Pre-Primary and Special Education there are 39 and 39 respectively. This situation leads to understaffed schools and forces them to take emergency measures. Ms. Vasiliou criticized the silence of those who had criticized the teachers' work stoppages, pointing out that the lack of staff undermines the quality of education provided. The POED is calling on the Ministry of Education to take immediate and substantial measures to resolve the problem, as the situation is critical and affects thousands of children.
