500,000 Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccines for Cyprus from EU

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, met with European Health Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi and Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski in Brussels to discuss the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. The Minister requested financial assistance for livestock farmers and the immediate start of vaccination, requests to which the Commissioners responded positively. Specifically, Commissioner Varhelyi committed to the immediate shipment of 500,000 vaccines to Cyprus, and will visit Cyprus within the week. Minister Panagiotou emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the European Commission and expressed her satisfaction with the rapid response to Cyprus's requests. The discussion with Commissioner Wojciechowski focused on the need to address similar crises throughout the European Union and to improve crisis management tools. The Minister also referred to discussions on the need to address diseases affecting many countries in the Union, as well as preparation for potential crises caused by natural disasters. Cyprus is seeking to strengthen cooperation with the EU for more effective crisis management. The immediate shipment of vaccines and the commitment of European Commissioners are significant steps to protect livestock in Cyprus and prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The Cypriot government expects to begin vaccination within the week and receive the necessary financial assistance to support farmers affected by the disease.
