31 People Rescued from Avakas Gorge in Separate Operations

The Fire Service conducted two rescue operations in the Avakas Gorge in Paphos yesterday, Wednesday, March 25th. The first call was received at 13:13 for 26 hikers trapped due to rising water levels in the gorge's river. All hikers were rescued using ropes and lifebuoys and are in good health. Hours later, at 16:20, a second call was received for five more trapped individuals. Three people were rescued from the water using ropes and lifebuoys, while the other two managed to exit the gorge on their own, also without injuries. Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis stated that in both cases, rescue teams responded immediately and the trapped individuals were taken to safety. The rescue operation was complex due to the geographical morphology of the gorge and the increased water level. The Fire Service reminds the public to be particularly careful when hiking in gorges, especially after rainfall, and to be informed about the weather conditions.
