30 Billion Pokémon Go Photos Used to Train Delivery Robots

Niantic Spatial, the company that emerged from Niantic Inc. (known for Pokémon Go), is leveraging a massive dataset of 30 billion photos submitted by Pokémon Go players to train delivery robots. Over the past decade, players have voluntarily captured photos and videos from public spaces, creating a detailed map of the world. This data is used to create a photorealistic model of the world, which is used by approximately 1,000 delivery robots from Coco Robotics in cities such as Los Angeles and Helsinki. Niantic Spatial is also developing a Visual Positioning System (VPS) that operates in real-time and bypasses the difficulties of GPS in urban environments, by comparing the robot's camera images with Niantic's database.
