Outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Affects Numerous Farms in Aradippou

A significant outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is affecting numerous farms in Aradippou, with over 25-30 livestock units confirmed to be infected, and a similar number scattered outside the two main farming areas. The Mayor of Aradippou, Christodoulos Partou, described the situation as difficult but assured that the Municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, is taking measures to contain the spread, such as closing entrances and exits to farming areas and spraying vehicles. Mr. Partou expressed concern about the economic and psychological impact on farmers, as well as the potential spillover effect on the Cypriot economy. He emphasized the need for psychological support for farmers who may lose their animals and livelihoods. The Mayor stated that the situation is particularly critical for Aradippou, which is an area with strong livestock and industrial activity. He expressed hope that farms outside the livestock areas will manage to survive, but stressed the need for further action from the Ministry of Agriculture to control the situation. Furthermore, Mr. Partou mentioned that the supply of feed to livestock farms and the transport of milk pose significant challenges that need to be addressed immediately, while reiterating that the Municipality is ready to assist in any way in dealing with the crisis.
