Cypriot Contribution to the Greek Revolution of 1821

The contribution of Cypriots to the Greek Revolution of 1821 was significant, with approximately 1,000 Cypriots actively participating in the struggle. Many supplies and volunteers were transported to Greece through Cyprus, with Admiral Kanaris using the island as a supply base. The 'Phalanx of Cypriots,' led by General Haji Petros, distinguished itself for its heroism in various battles, carrying their own flag with Cypriot colors. Unfortunately, Cypriot participation came at a tragic cost, with around 130 losing their lives in the Battle of Athens and many others during the siege of Messolonghi. Their involvement provoked harsh reprisals from the Ottomans, who committed atrocities to suppress any attempt at rebellion in Cyprus. Even Archbishop Kyprianos tried to appease Ottoman suspicions by calling on Cypriots to disarm, but the patriotic flame remained alive.
