Cyprus Needs More Rain Despite Recent Inflow to Dams

Despite recent rainfall, the need for water conservation in Cyprus remains critical. According to officials from the Water Development Department, more rain is needed to fully replenish the dams and overcome the drought period. Approximately 2.4 million cubic meters of water flowed into the dams over the past three days, with half going to the Paphos district. However, the overall dam capacity remains low, at 11.8% (34 million cubic meters) as of January 26th, compared to 26.1% on the same day last year. It is noted that Cyprus has a large number of dams relative to its size, having utilized almost all of the island's major rivers. The inflow of water into the sea is also considered important, as it replenishes groundwater aquifers and acts as a natural defense against salinization.
