2025: The Most Important Political Events in Cyprus Through the Lens of CNA

2025 was a year full of political developments for Cyprus, focusing on negotiations on the Cyprus issue and strengthening international relations. Two expanded conferences on the Cyprus issue were held in Geneva and New York, with President Christodoulides and the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, expressing their readiness for a new meeting under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The UN appointed Maria Angela Olguin as its Personal Envoy for Cyprus and Johannes Hahn as the EU's Special Envoy, marking the continuation of international efforts to resolve the issue. At the same time, Cyprus strengthened its collaborations with other countries, welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Cyprus also prepared to take over the Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2026, while the trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt emerged as an important factor of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. The signing of memoranda of cooperation with Egypt in various sectors, such as IT and tourism, confirmed the close relationship between the two countries. Finally, Cyprus received a positive response from the US, with approval of access to significant US defense programs. President Christodoulides submitted a package of eight points for roadblocks and other Confidence-Building Measures to the Turkish Cypriot leader, while the UN Security Council unanimously renewed the UNFICYP mandate.
