2025 Projected to Be Among the Three Warmest Years on Record

A new analysis by scientists warns that 2025 is on track to be one of the three warmest years ever recorded globally, confirming the acceleration of warming due to human activity and fossil fuel emissions. The global average temperature has already exceeded the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels, a critical limit set by the Paris Agreement. Despite the cooling influence of La Niña, temperatures remain high due to the continued burning of fossil fuels. The analysis documents 157 extreme weather events in 2025, with 22 cases examined in detail, causing deaths, economic damage, and states of emergency. Heatwaves are identified as the deadliest phenomenon, with their likelihood increasing significantly due to climate change. Furthermore, drought contributed to wildfires in countries like Greece and Turkey, while floods in Mexico and monsoons in Asia caused widespread devastation and displacement. Scientists warn that the frequency and intensity of these events are exceeding the adaptive capacity of many societies, particularly in poorer countries. Despite international efforts, climate negotiations are progressing slowly, and there is no clear commitment to immediate fossil fuel independence. Scientists emphasize that reducing emissions is essential to limit the catastrophic consequences of climate change, but progress is insufficient. 2025 serves as another stark warning about the climate crisis.
